The cost of boiling a kettle after the new energy price cap is quite shocking

A Tiktok account has gone viral for sharing a handy trick to save up to £500 on energy costs per year, just by boiling the kettle slightly differently. It comes as the nation is scrimping and saving as the cost of living crisis bites more everyday.

As of October 1, based on the new energy price cap, boiling a kettle could cost 1.95p. That’s based on the average 3KW kettle boiling for 45 seconds, which is around how long it takes to boil a cup of water.

The average Brit boils a kettle four times per day, according to the Energy Saving Trust. Times 1.95p by four, by the 365 days in a year, and those cuppas could cost you £28.47 per year from October.

The summary of the maths is that we’ve got to a point where people simply cannot afford even a daily cup of tea. It seems dystopian.

This Tiktok video, though not faultless, offers a pretty good suggestion of how to help. It involves boiling a flask full of water every morning, rather than continuously boiling the kettle throughout the day.

Tiktok account @costoflivingcrisistips shared a video, which now has more than 887,000 views, saying: “Boil your kettle once a day to save pounds. Fill up your flask, brews all day.”

Boiling one litre of water will cost about 6.5p per go, and that times the 365 days adds up to £23.73. That’s a saving of almost £5 per year.

Each cuppa uses an average of 240ml of water, so you want a litre of water to be safe. Litre flasks can be bought for as little as £10 from Amazon .

Yes, the figures are still pretty terrifying, but these little tips and tricks all added together can help it all look a little less scary.
